How ProBiora Probiotics Turned Around a Severe Periodontal Case

Periodontal disease can be notoriously difficult to treat, especially when it persists despite traditional and advanced therapies. This case study highlights how oral care probiotics, specifically ProBiora products, helped resolve a severe periodontal condition when other traditional methods failed.

Patient Background

A 52-year-old patient presented with a history of moderate to severe chronic periodontitis. Symptoms included bleeding on probing (BOP), generalized 4-6 mm pocket depths, gum tenderness, and persistent inflammation. The patient had undergone repeated scaling and root planing, laser-assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT), and laser bacterial reduction (LBR) with limited success. Bleeding remained widespread, and deep periodontal pockets persisted. Frustrated by the lack of progress, the patient was open to exploring alternative therapies. A saliva test for periodontal pathogens was also conducted, pre-therapy, to track treatment progress, which showed elevated levels of Pg, Td, Tf, and Fn.

The Intervention: ProBiora Probiotics

Given the stubborn nature of her disease, the patient was placed on a daily regimen of ProBiora Professional Strength, an oral care probiotic containing ProBiora3®, a patented blend of three probiotic strains: Streptococcus oralis KJ3, Streptococcus uberis KJ2, and Streptococcus rattus JH145. The goal was to repopulate the oral cavity with beneficial bacteria capable of inhibiting the growth and outcompeting pathogenic species associated with periodontal disease.

The patient was instructed to dissolve one ProBiora Professional Strength tablet in her mouth nightly after brushing and flossing while maintaining her existing hygiene practices and periodontal maintenance schedule.

Results

After 12 months of ProBiora Professional Strength use, the results were significant:

  • Bleeding on probing was reduced by 100%.
  • Most 4-6 mm pockets were reduced to 2-3 mm.
  • Gingival tissues appeared pink, stippled, and far less inflamed.
  • Periodontal pathogens present in saliva decreased substantially with decreases of 1–3 logs after ProBiora use (Figure 1).

Periodontal charting confirmed substantial improvements (Figure 2A–B). Previously critical sites stabilized, and surgical intervention was no longer indicated.

Discussion

This case highlights the potential of oral care probiotics as a valuable adjunct to periodontal therapy. While traditional treatments focus on mechanical debridement, they do not directly address the imbalance of the oral microbiome. ProBiora probiotics introduce beneficial bacteria native to the teeth and gums that suppress harmful oral pathogens, promoting an environment conducive to healing.

Although larger-scale studies are still ongoing, cases like this suggest that oral care probiotics can offer substantial clinical benefits, particularly for patients with refractory periodontal disease. They represent a non-invasive, safe, and easily integrated addition to traditional oral care.

Conclusion

For this patient, oral care probiotics provided the missing link; their use is supported by both traditional periodontal measurements and salivary diagnostic testing. After years of failed treatments, the patient finally achieved lasting improvements in gum health, pocket depth reduction, and lower periodontal pathogen loads. This case reinforces the growing evidence that a balanced oral microbiome is critical for periodontal stability — and that ProBiora oral care probiotics can make that balance achievable.
